Introduction
Daniya Kanwal is a young woman who has represented Pakistan in the USA as a female dancer. She has choreographed some of the biggest stars in the industry and has worked on several music videos.
From being a background dancer at her first LUX style award to being invited as a content creator in the recent one, Daniya’s journey hasn’t been easy. During the first LUX style awards, she was mistreated and wasn’t respected because, of course, being the backstage dancer, she was a nobody for everyone. Moreover, when she went to the USA as a female dancer from Pakistan, all she could hear people say was, “Don’t you guys have a curfew in Pakistan?” “Oh, how do you dance in Pakistan? “Is dance allowed in Pakistan?”
Daniya Kanwal’s Journey
Daniya started as a dancer 5–6 years ago. She believes it’s important to figure out what you are best at in life and what you would do even if you were not getting paid for it or if you were getting paid less. If you feel that you have found something that fulfills you and makes you happy, then don’t leave it at any cost. Just keep doing it.
When she got back home from her first LUX style award, she felt like she did not belong there, and this is not what she should be doing. She felt like a misfit. Daniya was in a dilemma about whether she should continue dancing or not. But by the end of the day, she was determined that dance was something she loved and nobody could have an impact on her decision to become a dancer. She decided that she would prove all the naysayers wrong and light her own path as a Pakistani female dancer. From there on, she did multiple projects as a background dancer. During a shoot that spanned over 13–14 days, she worked extremely hard, had blisters under her feet, and would go back home at 4 am. and be at the location again at 6 am, but she still felt treated like a nobody and didn’t get the respect she deserved.
Daniya’s issue was not dancing. It is something she has loved forever. Her issue was with the treatment given to her. But she overcame her fears, believed in herself, and has been successful in reaching the point she is at today.
“Whatever your passion is, you come and do that. You figure that out. People say so many things like you don’t dance well, you don’t look good, people talk about my skincare, people talk about how I talk, where I’m from, and I listen because nothing can stop me.”
How Daniya Kanwal Became a Content Creator
After spending three years as a background dancer, Daniya Kanwal decided it was time for a change, and she switched lanes and became a content creator. She stopped taking background dancer gigs and started creating content and putting herself out there. She made accounts on social platforms, including TikTok and Instagram. She used all her resources and started posting videos of herself dancing, making reels, etc. People would go on to say, ‘What is this going on? Why are you doing this? Are you even a Pakistani? Are you a Muslim? Why are you doing this? She received severe backlash, but that didn’t stop her.
“It’s a reality when people see an empowered woman doing what she loves. They don’t like it. They hate it. They can’t see an empowered woman. I am here to tell you that whatever you like, pick that. Find your resources, put yourself out there, and don’t listen to anybody. Anyone can come and tell you anything but don’t listen. Find your lane and stay in your lane, stay focused, and don’t move from your lane. That is the secret of success that I can tell you, that is the only success.”
Daniya Kanwal is an avid supporter of the statement ‘Believe in yourself,’ and this is what she recommends to others.
“Believe in yourself and have gratitude. Gratitude is something that you should not leave. Always be grateful, stay focused, and be in your lane.”
